Design, build & refurbish laboratory spaces

Designing your Laboratory Space

When designing a laboratory, determining the biological, radiological and chemical hazards, the type of work to be performed and the implementation of risk control measures are fundamental considerations. In order to determine how the work can be performed safely and effectively, a risk assessment and a needs assessment must be completed to assess the types of laboratory activities planned. While much of the facility design will be dictated by the placement of the equipment and systems required to perform laboratory procedures, biosafety and biosecurity must be considered when selecting the facility design and its features.

Elements to Consider

The laboratory activities can be performed safely, efficiently and ergonomically.
The normal movement of personnel, specimens, materials and waste can be performed safely without disturbing or affecting ongoing work in laboratories.
In case of an emergency, there is sufficient space for personnel to move quickly, or be assisted, carried or even dragged if illness or injury has occurred.
Hidden spaces or surfaces, such as behind or underneath furniture and equipment, can be accessed for maintenance, cleaning and decontamination.
There is adequate space and access for any necessary safety equipment, such as isolation switches, fire extinguishers and safety showers

OIUK LLP can carry out the entire design, taking into consideration all the above criteria, and the implementation of the Laboratory fit out from specification through to procurement and the on-site fit out of the project works.
